have grown up with two 1903 W&A.K.Johnston’s charts of anatomy & physiology, they always gave me an uncomfortable feeling when younger. Now, they fascinate me. Medical illustration is unfamiliar to me, there is a lot I don’t know about the science of the human body, but I can understand the pressure we put on our bodies. I have worked with medical materials (slings and bandages) and have photographed them stretched, pulled apart, and knotted to mimic the tension and anxiety in our bodies. I also layered up my images on the material (non stretched and stretched) highlighting that not all distress and anxious feelings are visible to others. I chose to project my final collection, giving an x-ray and medical feeling through transparency. If my work was to be displayed in public I like the idea of people walking past the projector lens creating the shadowing of human movement over the artwork.
