“Fast fashion is ‘fast’ in a number of senses… It is a model that is entirely unsustainable.” After reading this, I thought about the amount of clothes that get thrown away, either to holes as well as lack of use. After looking at my archive sample I found this thought more relevant, as the object was a sampler consisting of multiple trials of different stitching. My research consisted of exploring different types of embroidery, the hand stitching that was in the sampler as well as other traditional techniques. I wanted my focus to be on the process, using the ideas of trial and error, to be able to explore the different ways and techniques that can be used to mend or make the breakage in the cloth as a feature. The lectures I found useful were looking into the ways that the past has been predicted with the future on consumerism, although I have found that they have focused it as a way of power rather than accessibility and trend awareness being increased. I found that these linked in with the idea of being human as it incorporates the ideas of trial and error, exploring society’s and personal ideas of continuous improvement.
